Artist inspiration: "Not too long ago, I was reading about whales and how we have a symbiotic relationship with them. I had no idea that whales are responsible for half of the oxygen we breathe. That's right. Every other breath you take, you can thank the whales. At the beginning of this piece, it was unclear how I could ever incorporate that message. Then a single drip ran down the canvas. It looked something like a string. The girl in the painting is not something I would usually include. Yet as I looked at the piece, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I painted her very simply and roughly as more of a silhouette or perhaps a shadow. For without these colorful, majestic creatures, we would shortly become a memory. Our existence depends on their well-being as much as they depend on our stewardship."
